Adventure: A Kidnapping Unraveled by Barbara Frances Is an excellent book to help students improve their reading skills. Toward that end Positive Imaging, LLC enlisted Nora Garza Rodriguez, MED Bilingual/ESL Reading Specialist and Beryl Knifton, retired theater arts educator to work with Barbara to create a specially designed Teacher's Guide Because of the many ways in which this book can be incorporated in daily language arts instruction, we have created a teacher’s guide based on the book. The guide provides thematic ideas that can be implemented and serves as a springboard for innovative teaching as well. The book, Lottie’s Adventure: A Kidnapping Unraveled, initiates the opening of a door to the world of reading. Lottie, a preadolescent, is led down a path of adventures prompted by her curiosity. Her life is an example of twists and turns that the audience can relate to, unexpected yet credible. Text-to-self connections, prompted by Lottie’s single parent home life in which her great aunt, an extended family unit, is the primary caregiver, snowboard at the onset of the book. These examples maintain and secure the reader’s interest in the story. Text-to-world connections abound in Lottie’s choices in friends. You can expect to see vocabulary in contexts that facilitate the ability for the young reader to grasp and quickly incorporate its use. The guide includes vocabulary exercises on twelve chapters of the book. Complex sentences and compound sentences evident throughout the narration can be used as mentor text for the struggling writer. The author has modeled what good writers do through grammatical structures that can be incorporated for reading/writing connections. The guide contains prepared Standardized Tests based on eight chapters from the book. These tests may be printed and are ready to be completed by students. The Lottie’s Adventure Teacher’s Guide includes ready to use exercises for Formative Assessment, Writing, Critical Thinking using Bloom’s Taxonomy, and Art and Drama Activities.
